Pymble, NSW 2073
Turn off the apartment-lined Pacific Highway and into Pymble’s wide, tree-lined avenues and it’s clear to see why this affluent suburb is such a desirable place to call home.
Large blocks, some estate-like in size with pools and tennis courts, set the scene for some magnificent homes, both historic and contemporary, framed by sprawling manicured gardens. It's a place where children still play happily on the street and the lush green surroundings give this serene, well-established suburb a rather English charm.
It's named after Robert Pymble (1788–1861), an influential early settler whose 1823 land grant comprised some 600 acres, around half the land of the region. It's a discrete haven for well-heeled executives and CEOs and their families who seek out Pymble's tightly held properties for their scale, their proximity to exclusive private schools and their convenient city transport options.
Parks, playgrounds and local sporting fields are abundant in the area. Dedicated to lives lost in all wars, Pymble Soldiers Memorial Park has beautiful landscaped gardens with a hilltop view, Bannockburn Oval is a multi-purpose sporting facility with an athletics track, synthetic wicket, soccer fields, playground and clubhouse and Robert Pymble Park features tennis courts. The Sheldon Forest Track meanders through the idyllic bushland of Sheldon Forest, along ridge tops and down to the creek.
Both the Lane Cove National Park and Garigal National Park are conveniently close by, providing magical natural wonders to explore. Golfing enthusiasts can play 18 picturesque holes at the prestigious Avondale Golf Club (ranked Number 58 in the 2018 Golf Digest list of Australia's top 100 courses) or Pymble Golf Club, the latter located in neighbouring St Ives.
Pymble's retail precinct is concentrated around Pacific Highway and the railway station, where you'll find major services, the Ku-ring-gai Town Hall (a fine example of the Inter-War Spanish Mission architectural style), Pymble Hotel and a number of eateries. This includes the serious foodie's favourite Brasserie l'Entrecôte, which takes inspiration from the classic Parisian steakhouse.
However, just behind Pacific Highway, in and around Grandview Street, Pymble switches gears and becomes a charming neighbourhood village with a real sense of community. Locals head to Comme Chez Nous French Café which brings a little bit of authentic French café culture to the area, and Cellar 8 Wine & Espresso Bar for intimate after-work drinks.
A number of historic homes are dotted throughout Pymble including Grandview, a private Georgian revival sandstone landmark listed on the Register of the National Estate, and Merrivale, one of the most stately examples of the Regency style in Ku-ring-gai. Coppins (1935), also known as Eric Pratton House, is one of three large houses designed by Walter Burley Griffin in Ku-ring-gai and is a unique example of the Art Deco/Prairie style. Other architectural styles to be found in the suburb include Federation, Federation Queen Anne, Federation Free and Californian bungalows.
Local schools are highly regarded and are a major drawcard for families. These include Pinjarra Pymble Pre-school, Pymble Public School (whose alumni includes actors Hugh Jackman and Chris Lilley), Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School and the distinguished Pymble Ladies' College, with Our Lady of Perpetual Succour Catholic Primary School and Gordon West Public School located in neighbouring West Pymble.
Pymble railway station lies on the North Shore, Northern & Western Line, with a trip to Chatswood taking 13 minutes and a journey to Wynyard in the CBD taking just over half an hour. Local buses also take you to West Pymble and Macquarie southbound and to Turramurra and Hornsby northbound.
