McMahons Point, NSW 2060
A picturesque peninsula culminating in beautiful Blues Point, McMahons Point is flanked by Berrys Bay to the west and Lavender Bay to the east.
The original occupants of this area were the Cammeraygal prior to European settlement, while the suburb was named after Michael McMahon, a 19-year old Irish farm labourer who arrived in Sydney in 1848 and went on to become a wealthy manufacturer and local mayor.
Located 3km north of the CBD, this once predominantly working-class suburb is now among Sydney's most exclusive locales, with many of its gracious homes enjoying sensational harbour views. McMahons Point features an array of architectural styles dating back to the Victorian era, with classic residences interwoven with Art Deco apartments, more contemporary boutique developments and a number of elite waterfront properties. Loved and loathed in equal measure, a notable landmark on the McMahons Point skyline is the Harry Seidler-designed Blues Point Tower, set at the end of the peninsula where it soars above the surrounding buildings.
Blues Point Road is a renowned culinary hub, playing host to an array of multicultural restaurants and fashionable cafes. Dating back to 1864, the Blues Point Hotel is a local icon, with its terrace overlooking the harbour, while further up the road The Commodore Hotel is loved for its award-winning bistro.
Follow the harbourside walk that runs all the way around Blues Point and you'll come to the idyllic waterfront parkland of Blues Point Reserve, with its nautical-themed playground. A little further on you'll discover the exclusive waterfront restaurant Sails on Lavender Bay, with its postcard views of the water and Harbour Bridge.
Local schools are abundant and highly regarded, both public and private. Nearby you'll find North Sydney Public School, St Mary's Catholic Primary School, Cammeraygal High School, North Sydney Boys High School, North Sydney Girls High School, Wenona School, Monte Sant'Angelo Mercy College, Shore School, Marist College North Shore, Cameragal Montessori School, Loreto Kirribilli and St Aloysius' College.
Well serviced by public transport, McMahons Point can be accessed via a number of bus routes as well as train and ferry services for a picturesque trip into the city.
