Kirribilli, NSW 2061
The name Kirribilli is derived from an Aboriginal word Kiarabilli, which means 'good fishing spot'.
A picturesque, historic peninsula suburb that lies at the northern foot of the Harbour Bridge, Kirribilli has a wonderful village atmosphere, with its small but lively hub home to an array of fashionable cafés, restaurants, specialty stores and the Art Deco-era Kirribilli Hotel, part of the fabric of the local community since 1937.
Every month Bradfield Park plays host to the ever-popular Kirribilli Markets, where you can peruse everything from fashion to gourmet fare. Sailing enthusiasts can set sail from Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron, which dates back to 1862, while culture vultures can catch intimate performances at the quaint Ensemble Theatre, established in 1952 and home to Australia's longest continuously running professional theatre group. Just across the park in Milsons Point you can swim laps at North Sydney Olympic Pool or visit Luna Park, with the iconic smiling face presiding over its entrance.
This unbeatably convenient city fringe address is loved by young professionals for its proximity to the CBD, families for its great schools and retirees for its cosmopolitan, upmarket lifestyle.
Lined with resplendent jacaranda trees that are quite the spectacle come spring, its pretty, undulating streets are home to historic terraces, a smattering of grand freestanding homes and a number of tall apartment buildings from a variety of eras. Many enjoy intimate harbour views taking in the Harbour Bridge and the icons of the city skyline. Undoubtedly Kirribilli's most historic and magnificent residences are the sandstone harbourfront estate Admiralty House, home to Australia's Governor General, and neighbouring Kirribilli House, one of the two official residences of the Prime Minister.
Take a stroll through harbourfront Captain Henry Waterhouse Reserve, stopping at the various lookouts along the way to marvel at the Opera House and city backdrop. Enjoy a picnic in foreshore Milson Park with its towering palms and formal plantings or launch your boat from the boat ramp.
Two highly regarded private schools are found in Kirribilli, including the co-ed Catholic school Loreto Kirribilli and the boys' school St Aloysius' College.
Kirribilli is exceptionally central and accessible, with buses, trains from Milsons Point station and ferries from two wharves all taking you rapidly to the CBD.
