A beloved Northern Beaches haven, Freshwater (formerly known as Harbord until 2008) offers up a perfect pairing of laidback family living and beautiful coastline.
Freshwater is part of the Manly-Freshwater National and World Surfing Reserve that recognises the historical, cultural and environmental values of famous surfing beaches. This golden arc of beach is flanked by a headland at each end and can produce excellent waves. In fact, it's where Duke Kahanamoku held his famous 1915 surfing demonstration that popularised surfing in Australia (there's a memorial for him on the northern headland). For those keen to swim a few laps, Freshwater Rockpool is a 50 metre pool at the northern end of the beach.
Apart from its glorious natural attractions, a premier Freshwater drawcard is Harbord Diggers, a revamped recreational precinct on the headland with a killer view, enjoyed by locals and visitors alike. It's home to a selection of thriving restaurants and bars, retirement living (not a bad spot to retire!), childcare, a gym, health and wellbeing facilities, a swim school and more.
However, the most beloved mainstay of local dining and many a wedding would have to be Pilu. Located in a classic building right on the beach, it's here that chef Giovanni Pilu serves up his famous Sardinian and regional Italian fare. Pilu's also opened a successful venture at the Diggers.
Freshwater has a charming local shopping hub that's home to a number of eateries and specialty stores. Those in the know flock to Stowaway Bar for delicious food, cocktails and live music, Mrs Jones The Baker for mouthwatering pastries and fresh bread, Albert & Moore for health-conscious brekky and lunch, and Wild Forager for beautiful blooms and artisan homewares.
