Balmain East, NSW 2041
Balmain East is a peaceful enclave, and many of its homes enjoy magical harbour views taking in the city skyline, Harbour Bridge, Barangaroo precinct and Goat Island.
Perched out on the very eastern tip of the Balmain peninsula, Balmain East is a small, peaceful enclave where many of its properties enjoy magical harbour views across to the city skyline, Harbour Bridge, the new Barangaroo precinct and Goat Island.
Balmain East's streets are lined with classic terraces and cottages as well as apartment buildings and townhouses from a variety of eras, all vying for a glimpse of the water. Undoubtedly its most famous property is Onkaparinga, one of the most stately homes in the Inner West and the former residence of AC/DC guitarist Malcolm Young.
Balmain East has its own small cluster of village shops where you'll find a couple of well-patronised cafes, a doctor, supermarket, pizzeria and the fashionable gastro pub East Village Hotel. Down on the waterfront, The Fenwick is definitely worthy of a visit. Part restaurant, part gallery, it's located in a beautifully revived heritage-listed sandstone building formerly known as the J. Fenwick & Co Boat Store.
Balmain East's foreshore is dotted with parks, including Thornton Park by the ferry wharf, with its beautiful rose garden and playground, and Illoura Reserve, where you can take a leisurely stroll around to Peacock Point, with its tidal rock pool, iconic old metal boat anchor and Anzac Bridge backdrop.
On the northern side of the peninsula, a collection of historically significant former shipyard buildings has been transformed into Waterview Wharf Workshops, a unique space for business ventures and one of the finest remaining examples of maritime architecture in Sydney. You can't miss the brightly coloured buildings as you pass them on the water.
If you really want to take in all that's glorious and good about Balmain East, follow the Tom Uren Trail which encircles the entire suburb. Starting and finishing at Thornton Park, the 2.3km circuit honours the life of a beloved, passionate local politician and civil libertarian with a strong sense of social justice.
If you're after some lively social interaction, you need only stroll down the main drag of Darling Street and into neighbouring Balmain for a wonderful selection of multicultural restaurants, trendy cafes, intimate small bars, eclectic boutiques and weekend markets.
Local schools are sought after and enjoy great support from both parents and the wider community. They include Nicholson Street Public School, Balmain Public School, Inner Sydney Montessori School, Birchgrove Public School and Sydney Secondary College Balmain Campus.
Those heading to the city can enjoy a picturesque ferry ride to Circular Quay, taking in some of Sydney's most iconic sights along the way – not a bad way to travel to work each morning.
