Balmain, NSW 2041

Balmain is an eclectic Inner West peninsula haven steeped in history with regards to its properties, its many local characters and its working class roots.

It's also famous for having more pubs than pretty much anywhere else in Australia!

Balmain's humble beginnings revolve very much around the docks and the workers who made their homes in the small cottages and terraces that line its picturesque streets. Of course, gentrification has transformed the area into a fashionable address with prices that reflect the constant demand for its properties, most of which have been renovated to the designer standards that locals demand.

There's so much to love about Balmain, which is why residents are often reluctant to move from the suburb. You'll find that people who buy here tend to stay through many stages of their lives. While rising prices mean that the artists and bohemians who made the area their home now have well-heeled executives for neighbours, a sense of community still prevails, with something for everyone. It's very much a lifestyle address where people eat out frequently, local events are diverse and plentiful and the creative leanings of its residents are evident.

Balmain's main drag Darling Street is home to countless restaurants, small bars, specialty stores, antique shops and anything else you fancy! The Balmain Market in the grounds of St Andrew's Congregational Church is a slice of local history, having been around for almost 50 years and today focusing on handmade artisan wares.

Being a peninsula, Balmain's water frontage is extensive, affording many properties glorious harbour views and a select handful some prime absolute waterfront real estate. There is also a number of beautiful parks, including Elkington Park where you'll find the iconic Dawn Fraser Baths, a tidal saltwater pool being upgraded. Along with much-loved swimming legend Fraser, Balmain's been home to many well-known artists, actors and musicians who love its understated beauty and discretion. Famously, AC/DC guitarist Malcolm Young lived in Onkaparinga, one of the most stately homes in the Inner West.

Balmain's bordered to the south-east by White Bay where you'll find the White Bay Cruise Terminal, one of Sydney Harbour's two dedicated cruise passenger terminals and a great space to host all types of events. It's also home to the now abandoned monolith that is the former White Bay Power Station, which looms large as you cross the Anzac Bridge into Balmain from the city. Plans for its redevelopment have been circulating for years.

Local schools are very highly regarded and well supported by the community, which reflects the suburb's transformation into a family favourite. They include Balmain Public School, Montessori Balmain Campus (Preschool and Primary), Nicholson Street Public School, Rozelle Public School, Birchgrove Public School and Sydney Secondary College Balmain Campus.

Balmain's proximity to the city is a huge drawcard, with access either by a quick and picturesque ferry ride from Circular Quay or a short bus or car ride.
